What Does True Business Freedom Look Like To You?
Whether you work at a large wirehouse or an independent firm, at some point you may find yourself craving more business freedom. To go a step further, you may even already have your own independent advisory firm, yet you still yearn for a more satisfying level of freedom.
As successful financial advisors, the reason why we will always want more business freedom has to do with the nature of our job. The reality is that because of the nature of our business, we are always going to be pulling at both ends. As we meet with more prospects and obtain more clients, the workload increases, which in turn has the potential of taking away the very freedoms that we are trying to create for ourselves. The cycle continues—unless we do something about it!
In this article, I’d like to share some ideas of what true business freedom could look like. My hope is that these ideas provide some insight to you as to the possibilities of what your advisory firm can provide when it comes to business freedom.

True business freedom means that you have many options at your disposal in order to successfully run your business. Simply put, you have many choices in how you would like to serve your clients and how you’d like your clients to experience your services.
When, How, And Where To Work
When you think about your dream work week, what do you see? Think about that, hold on to it, and make the decision now to make it a reality. If you are seeking true business freedom, you want to have the power to decide when you will work, how you will work, and where you will work. Let’s even simplify it more; maybe you only want to see clients in the morning; and maybe you only want to meet with clients via Zoom. This can be a choice for you to make that will allow you to have true business freedom. The key here is to imagine your ideal working situation, and let go of doing it “how it always has been done.”
Technology
Freedom can also come from the ability to use the technologies and tools that you want to use; those resources that will allow your firm to run more efficiently and also wow your clients. There are a lot of choices out there, and if you are truly seeking business freedom, make technology and automation your best friend.
Advice, Products, Investments
Choice is important, especially if you want to be truly independent and experience the difference in running a business where you make the final decisions. Making the choice to recommend what is in the best interest of the client helps build deep relationships with clients, which is critically important for longevity. Being able to ultimately better serve the client will most likely benefit them more in the long run, and they will likely stay your client for years to come. This allows for the sense of security and freedom for which you are longing.
Spend Time On Things That Matter To You
This is one of the more important items that really gets at what true business freedom looks like. If you are an advisor that loves to sit with clients all day or network, how satisfying would it be for you to spend 99% of your time doing just that? Doing the things that you enjoy within your business is what true business freedom is all about. In addition, if you can create your business in such a way that you also get to enjoy the things you love outside of work, that takes business freedom to the next level. That is the goal, and it is possible—just as long as you take the time to create a system that allows for such an alignment.
Peace Of Mind
Finally, true business freedom also brings you peace of mind, something that sinks in after realizing that everything is in order, clients are being served well, and you are getting to enjoy the things that you love.
